TOWSON, Md. – Junior midfielder Christian Höfer and sophomore defender Daniel Grundei have been selected as co-captains of the Towson University men’s soccer team for the 2012-13 season, it was announced by head coach Frank Olszewski.
“I am very pleased that Daniel and Christian were recognized by their teammates as team leaders," Olszewski said. "The coaches certainly feel that they have the qualities necessary to lead this team on and off the field. There is a high level of responsibility that goes along with this kind of appointment and we feel that both Daniel and Christian have what it takes to carry this out effectively."
A native of Frankfurt, Germany, Höfer was the team’s leading scorer last season with five goals and 11 points. A converted defender who moved to the midfield to add scoring punch to the Tigers, he delivered by scoring multiple goals in two contests last season. Höfer scored a pair of goals against George Mason and added two more against Virginia Commonwealth. His first goal of the season helped the Tigers earn a 1-1 draw with Mount St. Mary’s. For his career, Höfer has netted 14 points.
“It's definitely an honor," Höfer said. "The coaches rely on us to lead the team. Daniel and I see it as our responsibility to get the team in the right direction."
Entering his sophomore season, Grundei has already established himself as a veteran with a great deal of leadership qualities. A starter in all 16 games last season, Grundei’s first career goal came in the season finale, a 1-0 victory over Georgia State. He also tallied his first career assist against Old Dominion and had five shots last season.
