TOWSON, Md. – Towson University women’s golf coach Kate Stepanek has announced the addition of six student-athletes who will be eligible to compete for the Tigers starting in the 2012-13 season. Tensley Clowser, Emma Hjarne, Taylor Lewis, Viveka Singh, Maddy Smith and Larissa Spiess will attend Towson University and compete for the Tigers.
“We are anticipating a great group of young ladies coming in the fall,” said Stepanek. “This will be a significant building year as we refocus our efforts to demonstrate success both in the classroom and on the course. The incoming freshmen, along with our returning players, will make for one of the deepest rosters we have ever had.”
Clowser, an exceptional student at Lancaster High School in Virginia, boasted a 36.5 nine-hole average during her high school career. She won a pair of high school tournaments and placed fourth at both the PGS Junior Girls Championship and the Wake County Junior Championship. Clowser was an All-District performer all four years and named All-Region twice. In 2011, she won the District Champion Individual Title and led her team to the District Championship. Clowser, who boasted three Top 10 and six Top 20 finishes on the Peggy Kirk Bell Tour during the 2011 season, also participated in varsity track and field, indoor track, and soccer during high school.
Hjarne, who is originally from Halmstad, Sweden, was a standout golfer at Wilbraham and Monson Academy in Wilbraham, Mass. She was named the female athlete of the month last May at Wilbraham after medaling in matches against Williston and Pomfret and finishing in the top 15 percent of all competitors at the KIT postseason tournament. She also finished second place in the Pippy O’Connor Independent Schools Tournament which featured the top 30 female golfers in the region. Hjarne, who spends her summers in Sweden training at the Halmstad Golf Club, also competed on her high school soccer and downhill ski teams and is a high red belt in taekwondo.
Lewis, a native of Millsboro, Delaware, joins the Tigers after playing at Indian River High School. She posted her top result at the IJGT Bridgestone Championship at the Penn Oaks golf course, finishing third in the event.
Singh is a 2011 graduate of the Shri Ram School in India. She took a gap year following high school and focused on improving her golf skills while training with Pro Chowarat, a Thai golf instructor, in Bangkok, Thailand. Singh has played in a number of amateur tournaments with her best finishing coming in the Evergreen Golf Club and Resort Championship where she claimed 10th. She also competed in the 50th East India Ladies Amateur Open and the All-India Ladies open. In addition to golf, Singh also was captain of her high school basketball team.
Smith comes to Towson from Jensen Beach High School in Florida where she was a four-year letter winner on the golf team. She was named All-Region in 2011 and 2012 and she placed 13th in the state tournament during her senior campaign. Smith also placed fourth in her regional tournament and sixth in her district tournament in 2012. In addition to her high school accomplishments, Smith played events on numerous Junior Tours, including the South Florida Junior PGA Tour, the IMG Tour and the Hurricane Tour. Her top finishes came at the Southern Woods Golf Open where she claimed third and in the Binks Forrest Tournament where she finished fifth.
Spiess, a native of Essen, Germany, finished seventh in her region in 2009 and qualified for the National Championships in her 16-year old age group.
