DOVER, Del. - Towson University women's golf freshman Larissa Spiess captured her first career tournament title by winning the Inaugural Delaware State University Hornets Invite, which concluded on Sunday at Maple Dale Country Club.
Spiess joins Morgan Reich and Emily Kwak as the only Tigers to win individual titles since the program began play in 2007. Reich won the Lonnie Barton Invitational in 2008 and Kwak won the same tournament two years later.
A day after carding a season-low 75, Spiess and the rest of the field had to battle windy conditions on Sunday that led to higher scores. Only three of 23 participants were able to post scores in the 70's during the final day of play.
The best round of the day was the 78 carded by Quinnipiac's Krissy Unger. Spiess was able to hold off Unger though as her day-two 84 kept her two shots clear of the field.
Freshman Emma Hjarne gave the Tigers a pair of top-three finishers as her two-day total of 162 placed her just one stroke behind Unger (161) and three shy of Spiess (159).
Freshman Viveka Singh was tied with Spiess and Hjarne for Towson's low round of the day as she also posted an 84 on Sunday to conclude the tournament in 13th.
The Tigers finished third in the team standings with a combined score of 670. Hofstra (658) outlasted Quinnipiac (661) to win the tournament, while host Delaware State (676) finished fourth behind the Tigers.
Towson will wrap up the fall portion of its schedule October 22-23 at the Fighting Camel Classic, played at the Keith Hills Country Club in Buies, N.C.
