TURKU, Finland - Towson midfielder Robby Zoppo and the United States Under-19 Men's Lacrosse Team defeated top-seeded Canada, 10-8, to win the gold medal at the U19 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championships on Saturday morning.
The title is the US men's seventh straight; the US has won every gold medal since sanctioned play began in 1988. Canada had defeated the US earlier in pool play, 11-9, in overtime.
Team USA had a 4-0 lead in the second quarter and held a four-goal advantage, 6-2, at the half. Canada came out firing in the second half to cut the US men's lead to one, 6-5, before the US strung together four straight to run its advantage to 9-6. Team USA dominated face-offs, 17-5, including a string of 7-of-8 in the second quarter.
