Playing tough even when the deck is stacked against you until the very end brings us to No. 7 on the Top Ten Moments from 2011-12 countdown.

On Apr. 29, the Tiger women’s lacrosse team hosted James Madison with the Colonial Athletic Association championship on the line. The Tigers were looking for their fifth CAA title since 2005 and came into the game undefeated at home and riding an eight-game win streak.

The first half proved to be a back-and-forth battle as sophomore attacker Rhiannon Coogle scored with 2:18 remaining to tie the game at 3-3.

The second half saw James Madison take a 6-5 lead with 14:25 remaining. CAA Coach of the Year Sonia LaMonica called timeout to settle her troops. Following LaMonica’s timeout, the Tigers scored three of the next four goals to take an 8-7 lead with 5:14 to play.

With 1:45 remaining on the clock, the Tigers were whistled for a yellow card leaving them to play a man-down for the final 105 seconds. The Tiger defense under the direction of Third Team All-American goalkeeper Mary Teeters came through like it had all season long. Teeters made a big save with 30 seconds left and picked up the ground ball to help the home team hold possession until the clock hit zero.

For her efforts, Teeters was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. She had seven saves in the championship game but perhaps none bigger then her one in the final seconds. Freshman defender Michelle Dufault joined Teeters on the all-tournament team as she played a strong role in keeping the James Madison offense in check all day long.

Check back on June 26 for the No. 6 moment in the Top Ten Countdown.
