Tiger Football Rewind: Towson-NC Central Notes

EIGHT IN A ROW: The Tigers have won eight games in a row for the first time since the 1979 season … In 1979, the Tigers lost their season opener to Morgan State and won their final nine games to post a 9-1 record in their first season as a Division II program.

SHUTTING DOWN THE RUN: The Tiger defense came into the North Carolina Central game as the fifth-best run defense in NCAA FCS, allowing 71.0 rushing yards per game … That number dropped to 53.0 yards per game after the Tigers held North Carolina Central to two rushing yards … Towson has yet to allow a rushing TD this season.

IMPRESSIVE DEBUT: First-year freshman running back Darius Victor made his college debut on Saturday against North Carolina Central and it was an impressive one … Victor carried the ball six times and picked up 53 yards and scored two touchdowns … His 10-yard TD run with 1:35 remaining clinched the victory.

CLUTCH RECEIVER: Senior wide receiver Leon Kinnard had a big game at North Carolina Central with a career high seven receptions for a career best 102 yards … Five of those catches came on third down and earned a first down for the Tigers … Kinnard finished the game with 144 all-purpose yards.

TURNOVER ISSUES: After turning the ball over only twice in the first three games, the Tigers turned the ball over three times in their win at North Carolina Central … The Tigers lost two fumbles and Peter Athens threw his second interception of the season in the fourth quarter … He went 90 passes between interceptions … Towson came into the North Carolina Central game with a plus-six turnover ratio and now has a plus-four ratio.

CAREER HIGH PASSER: Despite  being sacked three times, senior quarterback Peter Athens had the best game of his career … He completed a career high 20 passes and attempted a career high 33 passes … He passed for a career best 252 yards … Athens was not sacked in the first three games of the season but the Eagles sacked him three times.

WILD WILD WEST: After being held to 37 yards on 18 carries in the first half at North Carolina Central, Terrance West recorded his 14th 100-yard rushing game at North Carolina Central … West ran for 139  yards on 31 carries and scored two touchdowns … In four games, he has run for 498 yards and has scored 11 touchdowns … In his career, West now has scored 55 TD’s.

THIRD DOWN CONVERSIONS: One of the Tigers’ keys to victory was their success on third down … The Tigers converted 9 of 15 third down tries with Peter Athens passing to Leon Kinnard five times.

SACK PACK: Led by junior defensive end Ryan Delaire, the Tiger defense recorded a season high six sacks at North Carolina Central ... In four games, the Tigers have 17 sacks ... Delaire had two sacks against the Eagles and now leads the team with 3.5 sacks ... Drew Cheripko and Max Tejada each have 2.5 sacks.

BALL CONTROL: For the fourth game in a row, the Tigers won the battle of ball control … Towson had the ball for 33:34 against North Carolina Central … In four games, the Tigers are averaging 34:33 in time of possession.

ROAD WARRIORS: When the Tigers play at Stony Brook next week, it will be their fourth road game of the season … Dating back to last year, the Tigers have played six of their last eight games on the road … They have proven to be a good road team as they have won all six games, beating Villanova, Delaware, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Holy Cross and North Carolina Central.
