Tiger Football Rewind: Towson-Villanova Notes

FIRST QUARTER WOES: For the third game in a row, the Tigers fell behind in the first quarter … Two weeks ago, the Tigers trailed by 14-0 at Stony Brook in the first quarter before rallying for a 35-21 victory … Last week, New Hampshire owned a 20-3 first quarter advantage before the Tigers pulled out a 44-28 win … Against Villanova, Towson was behind by 21-7 after the first quarter but didn’t win … In the last three games, Towson has been outscored by 55-10 in the first quarter.

SECOND HALF TEAM: Despite their loss to Villanova, the Tigers continued their trend as a second half team … However, it wasn’t enough to offset the Wildcats’ 38-14 halftime lead … In the second half against Villanova, Towson outscored the Wildcats by a 21-7 margin … Towson also had 324 yards of offense on 51 plays in the second half while the Wildcats picked up 150 yards on 29 plays …  In the second half of seven games, the Tigers own a 139-37 advantage … Towson has been even more effective in the third quarter, outscoring their opponents by a 79-7 margin.

FIRST HALF NIGHTMARE: Against Villanova, the Tigers had a nightmarish first half … Towson only ran 11 plays and had 142 yards … The Tigers also turned the ball over three times in the first 6:43 of the game, leading to 21 Villanova points … In the first half, Villanova controlled the clock for 25:17.

HALFTIME DEFICIT: When the Tigers trailed by 38-14 at halftime, it was their largest deficit at intermission since the 2010 season finale … In 2010, Towson trailed by 31-3 at halftime of a loss at New Hampshire.

STOPPING WEST: The Villanova defense did a great job stopping running back Terrance West from rushing for a lot of yards … West was held to 61 yards on 15 carries, his lowest rushing total of the season … He did score two rushing touchdowns to up his season total to 17 TD’s … However, West showed his versatility … He had a career high six catches for 101 yards … He also threw a two-point conversion pass to James Oboh in the first quarter … West, who has rushed for 947 yards on 169 carries this season, had caught only three passes for 13 yards prior to the Villanova game.

TURNOVER ISSUES: Towson came into the Villanova game leading the Colonial Athletic Association with a plus-five turnover ratio … However, the Tigers were minus-four against the Wildcats … Towson lost the ball on three interceptions and two fumbles … The five turnovers led to 21 Villanova points … The Tigers’ only generated turnover came in the third quarter when linebacker Telvion Clark recovered a fumble at the Towson 10-yard line.

CAREER HIGH: Senior quarterback Peter Athens set career highs for pass completions, pass attempts and passing yardage against Villanova … He completed 24 of 41 passes for 355 yards and two touchdowns … Two Tigers had 100-yard receiving games as Terrance West caught six passes for 101 yards and Spencer Wilkins had five receptions for 125 yards and a touchdown.

END OF THE STREAK: The Tigers’ 10-game winning streak ended against the same team that started the streak … Last October, the Tigers beat Villanova, 49-35 in Pennsylvania … That started a 10-game winning streak that ended with the loss to Villanova … During the streak, Towson beat Villanova, Delaware, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Holy Cross, Delaware State, North Carolina Central, Stony Brook and New Hampshire again … The Tigers’ 10-game winning streak was the second-longest streak in FCS football and the second-longest streak in school history.

DRIVE TIME: The Tigers opened the second half with a very impressive drive ... Towson marched 90 yards on 20 plays to score on a 13-yard run by Terrance West with 2:50 left in the third quarter … That cut the Tigers’ deficit to 38-22 … By contrast, the Tigers had the ball for only 11 plays in the first half.

BLOCK PARTY: The Towson-Villanova game featured three blocked kicks … In the first quarter, Cameron McCurry blocked Drew Evangelista’s conversion attempt … In the fourth quarter, Arione Scott blocked a Villanova punt by Mark Hamilton … With 57 seconds left, Craig James blocked a 21-yard field goal attempt by Evangelista to extinguish the Tigers’ comeback hopes.
