TOWSON, Md. - On their second day of pre-season practice, the Tigers were forced to make a weather adjustment. Heavy rain in the early afternoon moved their practice from the lower practice field to Unitas Stadium.
Despite the last-minute change of venue, the Tigers staged a spirited practice that lasted about two-and-a-half hours.
While the Tigers have a number of newcomers on the roster, Rubin Carter is the lone newcomer on the coaching staff. He joined the Tigers' staff just days before the start of pre-season. Although he is new to the Towson program, Carter is an NFL veteran who has been coaching at the professional and college level for nearly 30 seasons.
He even spent three years as the head coach at Florida A&M.
"I think it's going well so far," says Coach Carter. "The most important thing for me is getting to know the players and for the players to get to know me. It's all about trust and building relationships.
"It's important for me that we establish a level of trust between us," he adds. "I want the players to understand that I will do anything I can to help them in any way."
As the Tigers' defensive line coach, Carter has inherited an experienced group, led by seniors Frank Beltre, Matt Morgan and Romale Tucker. A first team All-CAA selection last year, Beltre is a third-year starter while Morgan is also a third-year starter. Last year, Tucker led all CAA defensive linemen with 73 tackles.
"This is a very mature group," says Carter, who played for the Denver Broncos from 1975 to 1987. "They understand the expectations and they work very hard. We have high expectations this year and they realize it."
The Tigers will hold their third practice of the pre-season on Sunday morning.
