TOWSON, Md. – Sophomore running back Terrance West, senior defensive end Frank Beltre and senior defensive back Jordan Dangerfield of the Tigers have been named to the FCS Pre-Season All-America team, announced by the Phil Steele FCS Preview Magazine.
West, who is one of four players pictured on the cover of the magazine, was honored as first team All-America running back. Beltre was named second All-American at defensive end while Dangerfield was selected to the All-America third team.
In addition, the Tigers were ranked eighth in the pre-season rankings by the Phil Steele FCS Preview Magazine.
The winner of the 2011 Jerry Rice Award, presented to the top freshman in FCS football, West rushed for 1,294 yards as a first-year freshman and averaged 6.7 yards per carry. The second-leading rusher in the Colonial Athletic Association, he scored 29 touchdowns to set an NCAA FCS record for freshmen. The top scorer in the NCAA FCS last season, he also set a Towson single season record with 29 TD’s. Named as a Walter Camp first team All-American, he was also honored as the CAA Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2011, he was honored as the CAA’s Pre-Season Offensive Player of the Year for the 2012 season.
A repeat selection as an All-CAA Pre-Season selection, Beltre is a third-year starter at defensive end. Last season, he ranked among the team leaders with 68 tackles. He also led Towson with 12 tackles for lost yardage and had four sacks. Beltre, who has made nearly 200 tackles in his college career, was also named to the All-CAA first team after last season.
A two-year starter at free safety, Dangerfield has led the Tigers in tackles in each of the last two seasons. Despite missing two games last year, he led Towson with 93 tackles, a mark that placed him second among all CAA defensive backs. He also intercepted two passes, forced two fumbles and recovered a pair of fumbles. A pre-season All-CAA selection, Dangerfield was one of the Tiger co-captains last season. A first team All-CAA selection last year, he made a team-leading 96 tackles as a sophomore.
The Tigers, who are the defending CAA champions, were well-represented on the All-CAA pre-season team selected by Phil Steele FCS Preview Magazine.
Seven Tigers were named to the Pre-Season All-CAA team, including five first team selections. In addition to Beltre, Dangerfield and West, junior tackle Eric Pike and sophomore kick return specialist Derrick Joseph (left) were first team honorees.
A 6-5, 298-pound veteran at left tackle, Pike (right) is a two-year starter who has started the last 23 games in a row. A third-team All-CAA selection last season, he was o ne of the team captains as a sophomore and played a key role in the Tigers’ run to the CAA championship.
A second team All-CAA selection last season, Joseph led the CAA in kickoff return average with a 27.9 mark last season. While setting a Towson single season record with 978 return yards, he ranked ninth in FCS in return average. In the Tigers’ win over No. 8 New Hampshire, he returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown. It was the first kickoff return for a touchdown by a Tiger since 1995.
Enders, the Tigers’ starting quarterback last season, guided the Tigers to their CAA championship. He started 11 games and the Tigers won nine of them. Enders led the CAA in passing efficiency and he completed 67.3 percent of his passes. He completed 165 of 245 passes for 2,081 yards and 16 touchdowns. He was also the Tigers’ second-leading rusher with 387 yards on 91 carries while scoring five touchdowns.
He was named as the CAA Offensive Player of the Week twice.
A three-year starter at defensive end, Tucker led CAA defensive lineman with 73 tackles in 12 games. He also made 9.5 tackles for lost yardage and was second on the team with 3.5 quarterback sacks. He also recovered two fumbles. In his career, Tucker has made 160 tackles. He has 18.5 tackles for lost yardage and six sacks.
