TOWSON, Md. - Entering their regular season finale against George Mason on Saturday,
the Tigers know that in order to qualify for the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament, they will need to get contributions from junior forward Cheyenne Skidmore and sophomore forward Emily Banes (right) as they have all season.
Led by Skidmore and Banes, the Tigers have turned a tough start in CAA play to be in contention for a playoff spot in the final weekend of the season. In addition, the TIgers have won more CAA games this year than they have in any season since joining the league in 2002.
The fourth-leading scorer in the CAA, Skidmore has tallied 25 points this season in 18 games. She has scored eight goals with nine assists, including a pair of three-assist games against Hofstra and Northeastern. In addition, she scored two goals with an assist in the Tigers' 5-0 victory over Mount St. Mary's on Sept. 11.
Meanwhile, Banes has put together a solid sophomore season by scoring eight goals with five assists. Named to the CAA's All-Rookie Team last year, Banes had two goals in the Tigers' overtime win over Campbell on Sept. 16 and set a school record by scoring a goal in five consecutive games.
"With Emily and Cheyenne, you get a balance of different athletes and different skill sets," says Towson Coach Greg Paynter. "It is difficult for a team to stop both of them. If you stop one of them, you risk the chance of the other one being effective. From an individual standpoint, they are both exceptional athletes and attacking players."
With Banes and Skidmore leading the Tigers' offense, it marks the first time in school history that two players have recorded at least 20 points in the same season.
