TOWSON, Md. – The Tigers will travel to Coastal Carolina Friday and Saturday as the team opens its outdoor track and field schedule as part of the Coastal Carolina Invitational.
Head Coach Roger Erricker is optimistic that the outdoor season can be a productive one for the Tigers. Erricker cited the addition of the javelin, discus and 400-meter hurdle events to the outdoor season as a reason to be excited.
“For us, we’re probably a little stronger outdoors,” he said. “A good example would be freshman Emily Wenger. She’s very good in the 400-meter hurdles, but we don’t have that event indoors. She has recently shown some spark in that event. She could really benefit from the outdoor season beginning. We have some good depth in the throws and I’m really pleased with how we are coming along.”
Leading Towson in the throwing events will be seniors Shianna Smith and Shannel Shivers, who both dominated the weight throw and shot put events during the indoor season. Smith won every weight throw event she competed in this season, en route to qualifying for the Eastern College Athletic College Championships March 3-4.
Shivers also qualified for the ECACs in the weight throw and set the new school record in the shot put Jan. 28 at the Thomson Invitational. Her throw of 43’ 7.00” broke Kelly Robinson’s record set in 2006.
