MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Towson freshman Alexis Appezzato had the second-longest javelin throw in Towson history as the Tigers opened their outdoor season Friday at the Coastal Carolina Invitational at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.

Appezzato had a throw of 139' 9" to finish in second place in the event, just over two feet shy of Coastal Carolina's Danielle England. The freshman moved past Tina Shriver into second place in the Towson record books. Shriver's throw of 135' 6" is now third on the all-time list. Towson Head Coach Roger Erricker was impressed with his young thrower's performance.

"To do that in your first meet is extraordinary," Erricker said.

Kathryn Kennedy also had a standout result in the event for Towson, finishing in 13th place with a throw of 112' 11".

Senior Shianna Smith finished fifth in the hammer throw with a result of 159' 5" and the relay team of Kara Bucaro, Kaylin Gilmartin-Donohue, Liya Kasimova and Emma Tobin came in second place in the 4 x 800 for the Tigers.

"Shianna was going from the weight throw to the hammer and she hasn't been able to practice the hammer much, so for her to have that result that was really nice," Erricker said.

Saturday will be the final day of the meet.
