ATLANTA, Ga. - Georgia State scored four times in the bottom of the first to defeat the Towson University softball team, 4-0 on Sunday afternoon. Freshman shortstop Hailey Balk led the Tigers (15-17, 2-4 CAA) with three hits in the contest.
The Tigers threatened the Panthers (23-11, 3-3 CAA) in the top of the first as they had runners on second and third but Georgia State was able to get the third out to strand the runners.
The Panthers scored four times in the bottom of the first as Paige Nowacki had an RBI single and Callie Alford followed with a three-run home run to left field. The Panthers led 4-0 after one complete inning of play.
The pitchers controlled play the rest of the way as each team had just two runners reach third in the remaining innings.
Kaitlyn Medlam earned the win for the Panthers after giving up four hits on 4.1 innings of work. Erin Collins pitched the final 2.2 innings for the Panthers and gave up two hits. Junior pitcher Katie Lingmai took the loss for the Tigers after giving up four runs on nine hits while striking out seven.
In addition to Balk's three hits, junior leftfielder Kelli Lyons had a pair of hits out of the leadoff spot for the Tigers. Alford led Georgia State with two hits, three RBIs and a run scored.
The Tigers return home to host Villanova in a doubleheader on Tuesday, Apr. 3 at 2:30 p.m.
