The Tigers poured it on in the final round and moved up three spots to finish second to host Penn State for a second straight year in the 54-hole Rutherford Intercollegiate played on the Nittany Lions Blue Course.
"This is getting old," said Tiger coach Brian Yaniger. "Second again at this event and second for the third straight tournament this spring. But we shot the lowest round of the tournament (287) to finish strong. A first place for us has to be on the horizon."
The Tigers were fifth after the first two rounds behind leader Penn State with Army, Delaware and Loyola in front of TU. But Towson rallied, trimming 13 shots off its first two round scores (300-300) to finish with the 3-over par 287 on the final 18, seven strokes behind the champion Nittany Lions but a comfortable nine shots ahead of third place William & Mary.
The Tigers' three seniors led the charge. John Duthie closed with a 71 for a seven over par 220 that tied him for fourth.
After opening round scores of 76 and 77 that tied him for 28th for the first 36 holes, Nyasha Mauchaza carded the tournament's low round with a 3-under 68 (his low for the year too). He was the only golfer in the field of 90 to post a score in the 60's for the tournament. He finished with a 221 that tied him for sixth.
Pat Hinch turned in his best performance of the year and also tied for sixth with a 221.
Towson's other counter was freshman Matt Fry who tied for 23rd. He closed with a final round 74. Freshman Jay Dove tied for 40th with a 231.
The Tigers have one event remaining on their 2010-11 schedule - the Colonial Athletic Association Championships April 22-24 at Pinehurst. Towson is the defending champion.
