TOWSON, Md. - Towson opened the 2012 season by hosting the first day of the Tiger Classic at the Towson Center Tennis Courts. A field of six teams began the tournament with two rounds against various teams Friday.
"It's a great way to find out where we are," Towson head coach Doug Neagle said. "It's going to be a long hot day tomorrow and we're looking at this tournament to help us get where we need to be from a fitness aspect."
For the Tigers, Ayana Dow earned a singles victory, defeating Howard's Gabby Moxey in three sets 7-5, 3-6, 10-8. Dow's victory came in the tournament's second round.
The Tigers were also successful in doubles action, as the pairing of junior Nani Lizana and Andrea Samlin picked up a victory over Howard's Talia Johnson and Umarah Mughee.Samlin and Lizana established a great deal of chemistry as partners last season and continued playing well Friday, picking up an 8-5 win.
The tournament concludes with three rounds Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
