RICHMOND, Va. - Freshman defensive specialist Paige Sekerak of Towson University has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Volleyball Rookie of the Week for the week ending August 28; it was announced by league officials.
"Paige did a nice job maintaining our ball control throughout the weekend," said Coach Bruce Atkinson. "She gave us consistent serve receive and is rapidly becoming the on-court leader we know she can be."
Sekerak helped the Tigers post a 3-1 record at the West Virginia Mountaineer Invitational. She finished with 62 digs, 12 assists and five service aces on the weekend.
She started her weekend with 20 digs, two assists and a service ace in a four-set win over New Hampshire. Sekerak followed that up with 10 digs and four assists in a loss to #21 Ohio State. On Sunday, she turned in a strong performance in the win over West Virginia. Sekerak had 25 digs, six assists and three service aces against the Mountaineers. She wrapped up her weekend with seven digs and an ace versus Robert Morris.
Sekerak and the Tigers travel to La Salle on Tuesday evening for a 7 p.m. match. Towson makes its 2011 home debut when it battles Coppin State on Friday, September 2 on the first day of the Battle of Baltimore Tournament.
