TOWSON, Md. - Sophomore co-captain Katy Buck provides Tiger volleyball fans with the latest update of "Dig This." Buck recaps the Tigers' heartbreaking loss to Northeastern and win against Hofstra from this past weekend. Buck and co-captain Susan Gansor will be blogging all season long on TowsonTigers.com.
Just the thought of writing this blog makes me cringe as I am forced to think back on the events of Friday night.
Our match against Northeastern was one of those losses that will haunt you forever and just remembering the post-match feelings brings tears to my eyes.
We came out strong and played a great first two sets and went down to the locker room before the third set with the taste of being the top seed and the realistic possibility of hosting the CAA playoffs at our fingertips. All we had to do was go out there and take one more set and the top seed was ours.
I don't think we stopped fighting or let down, although it may have seemed that way from the outside, but somehow we came up two points short in the third set, crumbled a bit in the fourth set and then came up two points short in the fifth set.
I woke up several times Friday night thinking that I was talking to the team saying, "Okay guys, We've got this - just first to 15" and each time, it hit me that the match was over and we lost.
As hard as that match was to swallow, I think the most difficult part was trying to get over the anger and disappointment fast enough to focus on the important match we had the following night.
Saturday was our senior night and I think that the festivities surrounding our decorations and gifts for Susan Gansor helped all of us to be more light-hearted and look forward to our match against Hofstra.
Susan lit it up for her last performance here at the Towson Center and led the team with a .583 percentage with seven kills and no errors. She also added three blocks to her stellar season average, which ranks third in the CAA.
Dayane Van Ass was out this match but Karolina Sawaniewicz stepped in and did very well for us on the outside, posting eight kills at a solid .333 hitting percentage. Alysha McCreary added 10 kills from the right side and Paige Sekerak led us from the back row with 15 digs. Aubrey Kirven had a few key dumps and ended up hitting .500 with 38 assists.
It was great to take this win because it will be very important in our road to the conference playoffs, but also because it was Susan's last home match and she has been the leader of the team this year and we all wanted to give her a great memory of Senior Night to look back on.
I will say that none of us can even imagine what it will be like without Susan next year and no one can stand the thought of her not being around, but we still have much more of this season left before we can dwell on that thought.
Susan will continue to lead us to victory as we stand back up proudly and enter our final week of conference play as the Towson Tigers, who deserve to go roaring into the CAA playoffs. Go Tigers!!!
