RICHMOND, Va. – Junior righthander Michael Trionfo of the Tigers has been named as the co-winner of the Colonial Athletic Association Baseball Pitcher of the Week award for the week ending May 20, it has been announced by CAA officials.
Trionfo is sharing the award with Matt Davenport of William and Mary. Trionfo, who leads the CAA in victories, earned the honor for the third time this season. He is the only pitcher in the CAA to be honored as the CAA Pitcher of the Week three times.
Trionfo, who also earned the honor on March 26 and April 1, led the Tigers into the CAA playoffs over the weekend. With the Tigers needing to sweep a three-game series from James Madison, Trionfo won two games.
On Thursday, he pitched eight innings and allowed two runs on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts as the Tigers won the series opener against JMU.
In the regular season finale, Trionfo made his first relief appearance of the season. He came into the game in the top of the eighth inning with two outs and James Madison poised to increase its 4-3 lead. He retired Cole McInturff on a ground ball back to the mound. Trionfo pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and two walks with one strikeout. He enabled the Tigers to pull out a dramatic 5-4 win in 10 innings.
By earning his CAA-leading 10th win of the season, Trionfo broke the school record for wins in a season. He tied the mark set by Jay Eck in 1988 and matched by Mike Vota in 1995 when he beat the Dukes in the series opener.
A strong candidate for All-CAA honors, Trionfo has a 10-3 record with a 3.24 E.R.A. In 77.2 innings of work, he has allowed 28 earned runs on 78 hits with 29 walks and 51 strikeouts. In CAA action, he has an 8-3 record with a 3.14 E.R.A.
Trionfo, who now has a 16-14 record in his college career, will lead the Tigers into the CAA Tournament this week. The sixth-seeded Tigers (26-29, 15-15) open CAA Tournament play against third-seeded Delaware (27-25, 17-13) in the second game of the CAA Tournament on Wednesday, May 23 at 3:30 p.m.
The tournament is being played at Veterans’ Memorial Park in Harrisonburg, Va.
The winner of the Towson-Delaware game advances to the second round and will face second-seeded Hofstra on Thursday, May 24 at 3:30 p.m. The loser of the Towson-Delaware game will play the loser of the game between George Mason and Virginia Commonwealth at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday night.
