HARRISONBURG, Va. - Less than ten hours after Delaware pulled out an 8-7 win over the Tigers in a 12-inning, first round game, the Tigers were set to face George Mason in an elimination game of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament at Veterans' Memorial Park on Thursday morning.
The winner of the elimination game between Towson and George Mason will play a game at 8:30 on Thursday evening.
The Tigers, who swept a three-game series from the Patriots in March, are looking to junior righthander Michael Trionfo to keep their season alive. A second team All-CAA selection, Trionfo will be seeking his 11th win of the season. He leads the CAA with a 10-3 record and ranks sixth in the CAA with a 3.24 E.R.A.
Coach Mike Gottlieb is hoping that the Tigers can bounce back from a disappointing loss to the Blue Hens.
In their loss to Delaware, the Tigers took a 7-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning. However, they were shut out on one hit over the final eight innings by two Delaware relief pitchers. The Blue Hens came from behind by scoring three runs in the fourth, one in the seventh and two in the eighth inning. Senior relief pitcher Tyler Austin (above) struck out the side in the 10th inning and the 11th inning before Delaware scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 12th.
Towson has won eight of its last ten games against the Patriots. The teams had only played one CAA Tournament game against each other. In 2003, George Mason handed Towson a 25-10 loss.
