WILMINGTON, N.C. – Junior Jerrelle Benimon led four Tigers who scored in double figures with 19 points as Towson grabbed an early lead and held on for a 79-74 win at UNC Wilmington in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams at Trask Coliseum.

Towson, which has won back-to-back road games for the first time since the beginning of the 2008-09 season (at UMBC - 82-65, at High Point - 71-57), improved to 6-8 overall and 1-0 in league play.

Graduate student Bilal Dixon (14) and juniors Mike Burwell (13) and Marcus Damas (11) joined Benimon in double figures for the Tigers. Benimon and Dixon grabbed eight rebounds each while Benimon added a career-high five blocked shots and career-high tying five assists in the win.

Towson led by as many as 20 in the first half and took a 44-28 lead into halftime. The 44 points were the most scored by the Tigers in any opening stanza this season.

Led by the stellar all-around play of senior forward Keith Rendleman and the outside shooting of graduate student Tyree Graham, the Seahawks began to chip away at the Tiger lead late in the game.

Trailing 67-50 with 5:55 to play, UNCW went on an 18-5 run to cut the Towson advantage to just four. Burwell connected on a pair of free throws to put the Tigers up 75-69 with 24 seconds remaining and the Seahawks got no closer than three the rest of the way.

Towson did not score a field goal in the final 5:55, but hit 12 free throws in that span to hold on the for the victory.

Rendleman finished with 14 points and a school-record 21 rebounds as UNCW fell to 5-8 overall and 0-1 in league play. Graham, who hit four three-point field goals in the second half, finished with 18 points.

Towson will remain on the road Saturday, traveling to Philadelphia to take on CAA preseason favorite Drexel. The game will mark the 13th road game for the Tigers out of 15 games played.
