TOWSON, Md. - Two straight wins to end the regular season pushed Towson to eighth place in the Colonial Athletic Association and that's where the Tigers are seeded for this week's conference tournament that will get underway Friday at 12:00 noon when Coach Pat Kennedy's squad (9-20, 6-12) faces ninth-seeded UNC Wilmington (9-21, 5-13) in a first round contest at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Va.
The winner of the Towson-UNC Wilmington game will face top-seeded Old Dominion at noon on Saturday.
Towson and UNC Wilmington split during the regular season with the visitor winning each time. The Tigers prevailed 58-53 in Trask Coliseum. Less than two weeks later the Seahawks got revenge, topping the Tigers 80-72 in the Towson Center.
This will be the 23rd meeting between the two schools with the Seahawks leading the series 14-8. Three years ago Towson and UNC Wilmington met in a CAA first round game. The Tigers won, 67-52. That loss prevented UNCW from making its 24th consecutive CAA quarterfinal appearance.
If the Tigers are successful they will move to a much stiffer challenge in Old Dominion, a team Towson has beaten only once in 23 tries.
In other first round action on Friday, #5 and defending champion Virginia Commonwealth (20-8, 11-7 in CAA) squares off against #12 Delaware (7-23, 3-15 in CAA) at 2:30 p.m. In the evening session, #7 Hofstra (18-13, 10-8 in CAA) takes on #10 Georgia State (12-19, 5-13 in CAA) at 6 p.m. and #6 Drexel (16-15, 11-7 in CAA) meets #11 James Madison (12-19, 4-14 in CAA) at 8:30 p.m.
In other quarterfinal action #4 George Mason (17-13, 12-6) meets the VCU/Delaware victor at 2:30 p.m. In the evening session, #2 Northeastern (19-11, 14-4 in CAA) takes on the Hofstra/Georgia State winner at 6 p.m., followed by #3 William and Mary (20-9, 12-6 in CAA) against the Drexel/JMU winner at 8:30 p.m.
The semifinals are set for 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, with the CAA championship game scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday, March 8.
