PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Drexel hit 11 three-pointers en route to a 76-55 win over the Towson University women's basketball team in Sunday's Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opener. Junior guard Tanisha McTiller led the Tigers (6-6, 0-1 CAA) with her second straight "double-double" performance.
The two squads traded baskets early and found themselves tied at 7-7 with 16:12 to play in the first half. Drexel used an 11-4 run to open up an 18-11 lead with 11:44 remaining in the half. Three straight three-pointers from the Dragons (8-4, 1-0 CAA) made it a 30-15 game at 6:40 of the half. Fiona Flanagan hit a pair of free throws to give Drexel a 40-21 game with 35 seconds left in the half. McTiller hit a three-pointer with 11 seconds left which made it a 40-24 game at the half.
Drexel's first four baskets of the second half came from behind the arc as the home team opened up a 52-30 lead with 13:42 to play in the game. Hollie Mershon's three-pointer at 10:07 made it a 60-35 game. Trailing 64-39, the Tigers got 13 straight points from McTiller to make it a 72-52 game with 2:18 to play. Redshirt junior forward Nyree Williams hit one of two from the foul line in the final 22 seconds to make it a 76-55 final.
Towson shot 32.8% from the field and made 13-of-18 from the foul line in the game. Drexel shot 50% from the field and made 11-for-19 shots from three-point range. The Tigers held a slim 35-34 edge in the rebounding battle.
McTiller scored a career-high 28 points while adding 10 rebounds and three steals. Williams contributed nine points, five rebounds and two blocks while sophomore forward Markell Smith had five points and five rebounds.
Mershon led Drexel with 20 points, five rebounds and six assists. Taylor Wootton added 14 points while Flanagan had 13 points.
Towson remains on the road and will travel to Old Dominion on Thursday, Jan. 10 for a 7 p.m. game.
