DOVER, Del. - The Tigers rallied from a 10-point second half deficit for a 70-59 win at Delaware State on Thursday evening. Towson (9-2) won its fifth straight as three players scored in double figures led by senior guard Krystal Parnell's 22 points.
The Tigers found themselves down 10 with 12:32 to play as Delaware State (3-10) led 43-33. Sophomore guard Tanisha McTiller hit a jumper at 11:29 to start a 7-0 run by the visitors and cut the Hornets' lead to 43-40 with 11:03 to go. Tasia Bristow hit one of two from the foul line at 9:54 to put the Hornets up 47-40. Towson then used a 10-1 run to take a 50-48 lead with seven minutes to play. Delaware State tied the game at 50-50 with 6:44 to play in the contest. The Tigers would close the game on a 20-9 run to secure the victory. Towson was 12-for-14 from the foul line in the final 6:30 to help secure the victory including a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe in the final 3:50.
Delaware State scored the first basket of the game but the Tigers responded with seven straight points to take a 7-2 lead with 15:23 to play in the first half. The Tigers would extend their lead to 17-6 as senior guard Krystin Fields converted a three-point play at 11:54. The Tigers held a 19-6 lead before the Hornets used a 9-2 run to make it a 21-17 game with 6:43 to play in the first half. The two teams traded baskets as the Hornets tied the game at 25-25 with 32 seconds to play. Parnell hit one of two from the foul line with nine seconds left to send Towson into the locker room with a 26-25 lead.
Towson shot 39.1% from the field in the first half while Delaware State shot 30.8%. The Tigers held a 20-14 edge on the boards in the first 20 minutes.
The two teams traded baskets early in the second half as a bucket by freshman guard Destiny Shearin at 17:21 gave Towson a 30-29 lead. Delaware State then used a 14-3 run to take the 43-33 lead with 12:32 to play.
The Tigers shot 56.5% from the floor in the second half and 47.8% for the game. Towson took advantage of its chances at the foul line going 18-for-27 in the second half and finishing the game shooting 69.4% for the game. Delaware State shot 41.4% from the floor in the second half and 36.4% for the game. Towson held a 41-28 advantage in rebounds for the game.
Parnell went 11-for-15 from the foul line en route to her second 20+ point performance of the season. She added four rebounds and two assists. Senior guard Deree Fooks had 15 points and six rebounds while McTiller contributed 14 points and five rebounds. Redshirt sophomore Nyree Williams led all players on the boards with 10 while adding seven points and three blocks.
Bristow led Delaware State with 16 points while Tierra Hawkins had 14 points and six rebounds.
After a break for the holidays, the Tigers close out the 2011 portion of their schedule by hosting Loyola on Thursday, Dec. 29 in the Towson Center at 7 p.m.
