PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Sophomore guard Tanisha McTiller scored a team-high 15 points as the Tiger fell to Drexel, 66-38 on Sunday in Colonial Athletic Association play. The Tigers (10-4, 1-2 CAA) lost consecutive games for the first time all season.
The Tigers and Dragons (6-7, 2-1 CAA) battled early as a three-pointer by senior guard Krystal Parnell at 16:50 made it an 6-5 game. The two teams traded baskets as McTiller hit one of two from the line at 13:19 to pull the Tigers to within three at 11-8. Drexel then used a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 20-8 with 9:54 to play in the half. The Tigers used a 12-6 run to close their deficit to 26-20 with 2:25 to play. McTiller had seven of the Tigers' 10 during that stretch. Drexel scored four of the final five points in the half to take a 30-21 lead at the break.
Drexel shot 48% from the field in the first half compared to the Tigers' 29.2%. The Dragons held a slim 17-16 edge on the boards in the first 20 minutes. McTiller had 10 first-half points to lead the Tigers.
The Dragons scored 15 of the first 19 points in the second half to lead 45-25 with 14 minutes to play in the game. The two teams battled on both ends of the court as senior guard Krystin Fields hit a pair of free throws at 8:43 to make it a 50-30 game. Drexel shot the ball well down the stretch as Renee Allen-Johnson hit a jumper at 2:31 for a 64-35 advantage, the Dragons' largest of the game. Drexel would get one more bucket to claim the 66-38 victory.
Drexel shot 48.4% from the floor in the second half and finished the game shooting 48.2% from the field. The Tigers shot 19% from the floor in the second half and 24.4% for the game. Drexel won the rebounding battle, 40-31.
McTiller scored in double figures for the second straight game and fourth time in the last five games to lead the Tigers. Parnell finished with six points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Parnell's three assists moved her into the top 20 for career assists at Towson with 185. Sophomore forward Nyree Williams led the team on the boards with six rebounds and three blocked shots.
Kamile Nacickaite led Drexel with 19 points and four assists while Hollie Mershon contributed 14 points and four rebounds. Ayana Lee led Drexel on the board with eight rebounds.
Towson returns home on Thursday, Jan. 12 to host William & Mary at 7 p.m.
