TOWSON, Md. – The college baseball game between the Tigers (14-13) and George Washington University (14-14), scheduled for Wednesday, April 1 at John B. Schuerholz Park, has been postponed due to rain. The game has been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 8 at Schuerholz Park at 3:00 p.m.
This is only the second game that the Tigers lost due to weather this season. Towson’s home opener, scheduled for March 3, was cancelled due to wet grounds.
For the Tigers, the postponement means that they will have a nine-day break in the schedule. On Sunday, March 29, the Tigers staged a ninth inning comeback to stun James Madison University, 17-16, winning their weekend series from the defending Colonial Athletic Association champions. Towson’s next game is set for Tuesday, April 7 against the University of Maryland at Shipley Field.
Led by senior shortstop Gary Helmick, the Tigers are one of the top offensive teams in the CAA. With a .326 team batting average, Towson ranks third in the CAA in batting. In addition, the Tigers lead the CAA in runs scored (224), doubles (67), triples (10) and home runs (47), and slugging percentage (.558).
The leading hitter in the CAA with a .451 batting average, Helmick is the CAA leader in base hits (51), runs scored (43), triples (6), total bases (95), on-base percentage (.525) and slugging percentage (.841). He will take an 18-game hitting streak into next Tuesday’s game at Maryland.
In Sunday’s win over James Madison, he became the 11th player in school history with 200 career base hits when he clouted a home run in the sixth inning.
Junior third baseman Steve Yarsinsky also ranks among the top hitters in the CAA. He is batting .397, ninth in the CAA. Riding a 16-game hitting streak, Yarsinsky is second in the CAA with 46 base hits. He is also the CAA leader with 16 doubles and could break the school record for doubles in a season. The current record is 22, set by Jimmy Kittelberger in the 2001 season.
Senior first baseman Matt Collins and junior centerfielder Matt Collins also rank among the Tigers’ top hitters. Matt is batting .355 with nine doubles, five home runs and 27 runs batted in. His younger brother, Kevin, is hitting .351 with nine doubles, two triples, seven homers and a CAA-leading 34 RBI’s. He is also second in the CAA with 35 runs scored.
Senior catcher Jason Stifler raised his batting average to .347 last week when he was honored as the co-winner of the CAA Player of the Week award. In the Tigers’ series against JMU, he batted .615 with three homers and ten RBI’s. He now has 28 RBI’s, second on the team. His six homers rank him fourth on the squad.
