The Tigers (3-10, 0-4) will be playing their third road game in eight days when they face the homsestanding Dukes of James Madison (7-7, 1-3) Saturday afternoon in a CAA clash that will be televised by Comcast SportsNet Washington.
ROAD WEARY: The Tigers are playing their 4th game in 8 days, their third on the road during that span. They're trying to shake a 5-game losing streak. They're also hoping to snap a 9-game losing streak on the road. Towson's last road victory was a 69-56 win at William & Mary almost a year ago (Jan. 28, 2009). This will be the 31st meeting between the two teams with the Dukes ahead, 21-9. The Dukes won the first 8 games before the Tigers could make it to the win column with back-to-back victories in 1986 and 1995. The Dukes then won nine straight. Since then, the Tigers have won 7 of the last 11 and 4 of the last 6 games. The two schools have met 17 times as CAA opponents with the Dukes ahead 10-7. The two teams have split the last two years with the home team prevailing each time. Last year Junior Hairston canned 2 free throws with 45 seconds remaining in the game as the Tigers beat the Dukes 58-57 in the Towson Center. In the rematch the Dukes got the better of the Tigers, using a 17-1 run to break a 35-35 tie and go on to win 70-59 in the Convocation Center.
SWEPT: Coupled with an 84-64 victory earlier, Hofstra earned a sweep of the Tigers for the 2009-10 season with a 77-61 win over Towson in the rematch this past Wednesday night. The Tigers and Pride were battling back-and-forth over several lead changes and five ties until Towson let its guard down. The Tigers were enjoying a five-point lead, 30-25, when the Pride took off on a 12-0 run to grab a 37-30 advantage. Hofstra never looked back. Freshmen Chaz Williams and Halil Kanacevic combined for 34 points to lead the Pride to their 33rd win in the 52-game series. Hofstra assumed a 45-36 lead at the break. The Pride maintained at least a nine-point lead in the second half and led by as many as 19 late. Towson was paced by Robert Nwankwo who recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Calvin Lee added a team high 17 points.
NEAR UPSET: The Dukes came within seconds of upsetting pre-season favorite Old Dominion. A Monarch bucket with 13 seconds to play broke the game's ninth tie and lifted Old Dominion a 74-72 win. The host Monarchs outscored JMU 11-5 over the game's final three minutes. JMU went in front for the final time, 71-68, on Julius Wells' 7th three-point field goal of the game with 1:52 remaining but scored only on a free throw the rest of the way. The Dukes are 4-1 at home this season. They've hosted two common opponents; beating UMBC 53-51 while losing 49-44 to Georgia State. JMU is led by 6-10, 255 lb. junior forward Denzel Bowles who is a transfer from Texas A&M. He became eligible 6 games ago and is lighting them up, averaging 23.3 points and 10.2 rebounds. He scored a career high 37 points and grabbed 15 rebounds against Gardner-Webb, his second game in a JMU uniform. He has four double-doubles in his six games. Wells is chipping in 16.9 ppg. He's coming off a 29-point performance in the loss to Old Dominion.
