Game Notes

The Tigers are looking to rebound from last Wednesday night's loss at Virginia Commonwealth when they meet UNC Wilmington in Trask Colesium in a CAA matchup. The game will be carried back to Towson on WTMD (89.7 FM) Radio and aired live on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN). Opening tip is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

LOOKING FOR A TURN AROUND: The Tigers are hoping to turn their season around as they begin the stretch run. They've lost 4 straight and 11 of their last 12. This will be the 21st meeting between the two teams. UNCW leads the series 13-7 with 10 of its wins over Towson coming since the Tigers joined the CAA in 2002. The Tigers registered their first sweep of the Seahawks two years ago year. Towson beat UNCW 75-61 in the Towson Center in a regular season match up. The Tigers then ended the Seahawks' season by beating them 67-52 in the opening round of the 2007 CAA Tournament. The loss prevented UNCW from making its 24th consecutive CAA quarterfinal appearance. Last year the Seahawks became the first team in five years to score 100 points on the Tigers when they escaped the Towson Center with a 103-98 victory in double overtime as Chad Tomko scored 25 points and dished out a career high 15 assists. Trask has not been Towson's favorite place over the years. In 2002 the Tigers lost 76-37, recording their all-time low score as a Division I team. In their nine meetings in Trask, the Seahawks have outscored Towson by almost 20 points per game.

BLITZED: The Tigers ran into a hot shooting VCU team this past Wednesday night that launched an all out three-point blitz that overwhelmed Towson 112-53. The Rams sank a school record (tied the CAA record) 20 three-pointers in handing the Tigers their worst loss in 30 years as a Division I program. The 59-point margin was the biggest since William & Mary beat the Tigers by an all-time 63 points, 94-31, 62 years ago in 1948. The 112 points were the most surrendered in a game since a 120-73 loss at Maryland in 1994. Before the first 20 minutes expired VCU had a commanding 23-point lead, 55-32, on 65 per cent shooting. It got uglier in the second half. Seven different Rams hit a three-pointer. As a team VCU was 20 of 33 for a school record. It tied the CAA record set by Navy. VCU was 41 of 65 from the floor to post a 63.1% field goal percentage. The Tigers shot 36 per cent. VCU won the battle of the boards too, outrebounding the Tigers 46-21. Despite a 45-point lead, 92-47, the Rams' continued their long range blitz, scoring their last five field goals from beyond the arc as they soared past the century mark to the delight of their home crowd. Starters Brian Morris and Robert Nwankwo remained on the bench where they've been for the past couple of games while nursing injuries. Jarrel Smith and Josh Thornton tied for Towson scoring honors with 12 points each. Isaiah Philmore added 11 points and a team high 5 rebounds.

SIMILAR FATE: The Seahawks were suffering through a similar fate Wednesday night on Long Island where Hofstra tagged UNCW with a 93-54 loss. That contest was pretty much decided in the first half too as the Pride sprinted to a 54-25 lead into the break. Hofstra led by as many as 42 (78-36) in the second half. UNCW has lost 6 of its last 7 games with a 67-64 win in Trask Colesium marking the lone victory. Chad Tomko leads the Seahawks with a 13.6 average followed by John Fields with an 11.7 clip. Fields is the CAA's second leading rebounder, behind Robert Nwankwo, with a 9.1 average.  Johnny Wolf and Tomko are running 1-2 in the CAA at the free throw line.

THIS IS THE 2010 COACHES vs. CANCER SUITS AND SNEAKERS AWARENESS WEEKEND - Friday, Jan. 29 through Sunday, Jan. 31, in which college basketball coaches nationwide will wear sneakers with their sideline attire to raise cancer awareness and remind fans that by making healthy lifestyle choices, such as regular exercise and a healthy diet, they can reduce their own cancer risk. Coaches vs. Cancer is a collaboration of the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).
