OREGON RIDGE – With their top runner unable to perform the Tigers relied on their freshmen and newcomers to show the way in the 26th annual Baltimore Metro Women’s Cross Country Meet hosted by Towson on the Oregon Ridge Park course Friday afternoon.
The Tigers entered the meet as the four-time defending team champion but a more experienced Johns Hopkins squad prevailed, edging Towson 44-49 for top honors.
Sophomore Katie Ogden, Towson’s top runner, was nursing an injury and may not be able to compete for several weeks. The Tigers missed her in the lineup Friday afternoon.
“A healthy Katie Ogden makes the difference in the meet for us,” said Tigers’ coach Roger Erricker. “We have some others who aren’t 100 per cent either but I was very pleased with the way our new runners performed.”
Towson’s top finisher was freshman Kaylin Gilmartin-Donohue who placed sixth overall with a time of 18:46. That was the seventh best time by a Towson runner on the 5K Oregon Ridge Park course.
Gilmartin-Donohue was followed by freshman Liya Kasimova who placed ninth overall with a time of 18:55, another top 10 time on the course for a Tiger.
Sophomore Brandi Gervais (19:17), a transfer from Southeast Missouri State, was tenth overall followed by junior Michelle Donadio (19:19). Junior Megan DiGregorio was 13th (19:29).
Johns Hopkins junior Laura Paulsen successfully defended her Metro title, finishing second overall in 18:10 among the Metro teams.
Binghamton University’s Katie Radzik took top individual honors with an 18:03. Binghamton, Norfolk State and Delaware State were not part of the Metro Meet mix.
On the men’s side Binghamton captured the team honors with the Blue Jays finishing second.
