HUNT VALLEY, Md. – Looking to reclaim the Baltimore Metro Meet title, the Tigers and Johns Hopkins accounted for the top 15 finishes in the annual meet at Oregon Ridge Park on Friday afternoon. However, the Blue Jays claimed seven of the top eight spots to edge the Tigers for their second straight team title.
Led by senior Laura Paulsen, the Blue Jays scored 17 points while the Tigers had a total of 46 points. Paulsen, who won her fourth consecutive Baltimore Metro Meet individual championship, finished with a time of 18:27.15 as the Blue Jays took the top three spots. Sophomore Kaylin Gilmartin-Donohue recorded a time of 18:52.77 to lead the Tigers with a fourth-place finish.
“I thought we ran okay for the first meet of the year,” Towson Coach Roger Erricker said. “Hopkins was just really good. They would be a good Division I team. They are ranked fifth in the nation in Division III and they deserve that ranking.”
Erricker added, “I thought Kaylin ran very well today. She had a very strong finish as our top runner today, which is quite an accomplishment for her."
While Gilmartin-Donohue led the Tigers in the season opener, junior Brandi Gervais finished ninth in the meet with a time of 19:11.65 as Towson took the next five spots. Sophomore Liya Kasimova followed in tenth place (19:12.45) while sophomore Katie Ogden placed 11th in her first meet in nearly two years by crossing the finish line in 19:22.27.
Senior Megan DiGregorio (19:27.83) and sophomore Erika Griffith (19:33.16) rounded out the Tigers’ top finishes with 12th and 13th place finishes, respectively.
McDaniel finished in third place with 107 points while Loyola (Md.) earned a fourth place showing by scoring 111 points.
The Blue Jays also won the men’s team title with four runners in the top six spots, edging Morgan State. Freshman Justus David of Morgan State won the individual title with a time of 16:05.04.
The Tigers will return to action next Saturday afternoon when they host the Towson Invitational at Oregon Ridge Park at 10 a.m.
