TOWSON, Md. - Sophomore Liya Kasimova showed the way as the Tigers captured the top seven spots and ran away with the team title in the Towson Invitational Cross Country Meet at Oregon Ridge Park Saturday.
The Tigers scored a perfect 15 to outdistance second place Salisbury (69), followed by Delaware State and Maryland Eastern Shore (105), Coppin State (154), Bowie State (155), Morgan State (159) and District of Columbia (221).
Kasimova, who set a course record for a Towson runner last year by touring the 5K layout in 18:15, placed first with a 19:14, six seconds ahead of Tiger teammate Brandi Gervais. Junior Lindsay Warfield ran third in 19:24 ahead of sophomores Kaylin Gilmartin-Donohue (19:28), Katie Ogden (19:33) and Erika Griffith (20:328).
Delaware State freshman Dashera Richardson was the first non-Towson runner to finish, placing eighth in 20:36.
"We ran as a team which we didn't do last week," said Tiger coach Roger Erricker, referring to Towson's second place finish in the Baltimore Metro Meet. "We ran together. We didn't go out quite as hard last week either. I'm very pleased with the way we performed today."
The course was soft because of the previous day's rain and also measured a little longer due to a fallen tree on the course that added an extra 100 meters to the distance.
Towson is back in action again next Saturday when the Tigers travel to White Clay Creek State Park for the Blue Hen Invitational hosted by the University of Delaware.
On the men's side Maryland Eastern Shore junior Amon Kiprotich won the individual title but Salisbury claimed five of the top nine finishes to earn the team championship.
