TOWSON, Md. – The Tigers’ cross country team opens its 2009 season at Oregon Ridge Park on Friday, September 4th when it hopes to reclaim the team title as Towson hosts the 27th Annual Baltimore Metro Meet.
Towson entered last year’s meet as the four-time defending champ but a more experienced Johns Hopkins squad prevailed, edging the Tigers 44-49.
Joining the Tigers and the defending champion Blue Jays will be Loyola, Morgan State, Coppin State, Goucher and Stevenson.
The following weekend the Tigers will attempt to defend their title in the Towson Invitational at Oregon Ridge Park. Liya Kasimova, a freshman last year, set a new course record for a Towson runner on the 5K course as the Tigers held off second place Albany 41-45.
A highlight of the 2009 schedule will be the Tigers’ return to the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa. Towson last competed in this prestigious event 24 years ago.
“It’s an interesting schedule,” said Tiger coach Roger Erricker. “The Paul Short Invitational is always one of the biggest college meets in the East each year. We’ll be up to the challenge.”
