BATON ROUGE, La. – The Towson University baseball team arrived in Baton Rouge and won its first game of the season over Southern 5-2, splitting on the day following a 6-0 defeat against No. 6 LSU.
Towson (1-5) scored multiple runs in the third and fourth innings against defending SWAC champion Southern (2-2), holding the Jaguars scoreless in the final five innings off the bullpen pitching of
Andalo Santangelo and
Jake Pecilunas.
Into game two, Towson threatened with a pair of runners on in the top of the sixth but fell from early hitting from its top-10 opponent as LSU (4-1) scored six runs in the opening three innings.
Key Stats:
- James Moses hit safely in both games, combining to go 3-for-8 on the day. Nolan Young also hit 3-for-8 combined, notching two doubles and an RBI vs. Southern.
- In game one, Nate Nabholz came just a third of an inning shy of qualifying for the win, going 4.2 innings with two runs and five strikeouts. Andalo Santangelo (1-0) picked up the win in the relief with the next four outs, striking out one, with Jake Pecilunas earning the three-inning save with two strikeouts and no runs.
- Teddy Blumenauer (0-2) got the loss in game two, going two-and-two-thirds with six runs, only three earned, and a strikeout. Justin Rebok and Tyler Russo each pitched 2.2 innings with no runs allowed.
- For Southern, Tremaine Spears hit a fourth inning two-run home run for the Jaguars' offensive production. Starter Joseph Battaglia (0-1) recorded the loss, throwing seven innings with five runs and five strikeouts.
- LSU's second man in the lineup, Terry Crews, hit a home run and triple in a 2-for-5 night, bringing in four RBI. Starter Blake Money (2-0) won the game on seven innings, no runs and seven strikeouts.
How It Happened (Game 1):
- Nate Nabholz started off well in the first couple of innings, striking out two in the top of the second to keep Southern off the board. In the bottom of the second, Burke Camper reached via an error. Nolan Young drove him in on the next at-bat with a double to the left-center gap to make it 1-0 Tigers.
- In the next inning, Towson loaded the bases with nobody out. Bryce Frederick hit a sacrifice fly to right to bring home a run. Two batters later, James Moses got caught in a rundown, but stayed safe enough time to allow Chandler Castleberry to score to push the score to 3-0 Towson.
- The following half-inning, Southern hit a two-run home run to pull within one. Towson got the lead right back to three in the bottom of the fourth. Back-to-back doubles by Young and Elijah Dickerson brought home a run. After a sacrifice bunt, Jordan Peyton lined a single to right to bring home Dickerson as Towson led 5-2.
- Andalo Santangelo came in during the fifth and stranded runners then and the sixth. Jake Pecilunas headed to the mound in the seventh and took control, keeping Southern off the scoreboard the rest of the way and sending Towson to a 5-2 victory.
How It Happened (Game 2):
- James Moses notched the first hit of the game with a one-out single but was stranded. LSU got an early start in the game with a two-run home run in the opening inning to lead 2-0. A diving catch by Danny Becerra at short ended the inning with no further damage.
- LSU added another run in the second then three unearned runs in the third to lead 6-0.
- Justin Rebok entered and held down LSU as Towson tried to get the bats going. Towson threatened in the fifth with a Jake Lysaght single putting two runners on with two outs, but the visitors could not score.
- Towson had baserunners in each of the final five innings to put pressure on LSU as Tyler Russo held the home team without any runs in the final frames, but Towson could not get a runner home and fell 6-0.
Inside the Numbers:
- Jake Pecilunas came out of the bullpen vs. Southern for his 85th career pitching appearance for Towson, setting a new program record. He also picked up the save in that game for his seventh in his collegiate career, tying him for 10th all-time in program history.
- This was the first-ever meeting between Towson and LSU.
- All four of Towson's defeats have come against ranked opponents.
- Chandler Castleberry's five-game hitting streak was snapped in the night game at LSU.

Towson returns to Alex Box Stadium to play Southern tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. ET (6:30 p.m. CT).
