ABOUT US

The Sports Medicine program at Towson has grown under the watchful eye of Terry O'Brien (Towson University ‘75, University of Virginia ’79) who is in his 25th year as the Tigers' Head Athletic Trainer. From developing the highly successful Athletic Training Education Program to spearheading the university's effort to design and equip the Ford-Vetter Sports Medicine Facility located in the field house adjacent to Johnny Unitas Stadium, O'Brien is complimented by his fellow staff of Certified Athletic Trainers who are dedicated to providing superior medical care to Towson athletes.

The Certified Athletic Training staff are also Approved Clinical Instructors in the University’s accredited Athletic Training Education Program. The athletic training students are selected from a pool of approximately 80 students enrolled in ATEP. Towson is one of two universities in Maryland to offer this as an accredited program. Towson's ATEP, which was the first to be established in the state, is the larger of the two and the only program working with Division 1 athletes.

In its second decade of existence, ATEP has graduated over 400 students who have pursued careers in athletic training, medicine, physical therapy, medical administration, sales, public service, private business and a variety of other health care areas. The athletic training students learn and refine their clinical skills while working with the sports medicine staff in servicing Towson's 19 varsity sports.

Physician services are provided by Orthopedic Associates, a major Baltimore region orthopedic practice. Dr. Terri McCambridge, a primary care specialist and former gymnast, is the team's Physician Director, while Dr. Scott Tarantino, an orthopedic trauma surgeon and former baseball player, is the Team's Orthopedist. These physicians allow Towson's athletes access to a wide variety of specialists, surgeons, and therapists for the shoulder, hand, ankle, foot, hip, knee and many other orthopedic issues.

Drawing from their own experiences as athletes, Dr. McCambridge and Dr. Tarantino stay current on issues that have an impact in sports medicine. Both are very cognizant of the demands made on athletes. They have a deep perspective of competition, understanding what is required of student-athletes, the time commitment, the pressures to play and to return to the lineup, as well as being able to identify high-risk situations. Both exhibit a high level of energy for dealing with the athletes at Towson.

The St. Joseph Medical Center, located across the street from the stadium, is an adjunct partner of Orthopedic Associates, giving the Tigers enhanced access to additional expertise. Towson is located within a few miles of a number of the finest medical facilities in the country, including the Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC), Union Memorial Hospital, the University of Maryland Hospital and Johns Hopkins University Hospital. Towson's access to these health care resources is a direct result of the Tigers' relationship with Orthopedic Associates.
