Towson Baseball Downed in Series Finale at No. 25 Miami

MIAMI – The Towson University baseball team fell in the series finale at No. 25 Miami 11-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Towson (0-4) scored in the opening frame for the early lead on an RBI from Bryce Frederick to score Chandler Castleberry, but Miami (4-0) scored 11 unanswered runs for the win.

Key Stats:
  • From the leadoff spot, Chandler Castleberry finished 1-for-4 with a run scored off his double.  Nolan Young reached base twice, going 1-for-3 with a walk.
  • On the mound, the defeat went to Nick Ramanjulu (0-1) with eight runs and a strikeout in his three-inning start.  Four Towson relievers earned scoreless outings: Jake Pecilunas, Cam Clark, Max Simpson and Jake Becker.
  • For Miami, Lorenzo Carrier was 2-for-5, tallying five RBI, including a grand slam in the second inning.  Alex McFarlane (1-0) notched the victory in a five-inning start with one run and six strikeouts.
How It Happened:
  • Towson got on the board right out of the gate, starting with Chandler Castleberry hitting a leadoff double to begin the game.  Elijah Dickerson advanced him via bunt to third, then Bryce Frederick reached on an error for an RBI as Castleberry scored.  Towson led 1-0.
  • Nick Ramanjulu retired the Miami side in order in the bottom of the first, but in the next inning, a one-out grand slam by Lorenzo Carrier pushed Miami up 4-1.
  • Jacob Terao drew a four-pitch walk in the top of the third but could not advance.  Miami added four more in the bottom half of the frame, including a three-run home run by Maxwell Romero, to go up 8-1.
  • Towson tried to chip away with runners on in the fourth, fifth and sixth, but could not plate any players. The Hurricanes got another in the fourth and a pair more in the sixth.  Towson fell to Miami 11-1.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Entering in relief in the sixth inning, Jake Pecilunas made his 84th career appearance for Towson, tying the all-time program record.  Tyler Austin had 84 career appearances from 2009-12.
  • Chandler Castleberry hit safely in all four games vs. Miami.
Next Game:
Towson heads to Baton Rouge, Louisiana next weekend for four games, beginning with a game vs. Southern on Friday, Feb. 25 at 1 p.m. on the campus of LSU.
