Hot Bats Help Baseball Top Richmond in the Penultimate Mid-Week Game of 2024

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team faced Richmond on Tuesday afternoon at John B. Schuerholz Park. After a rain delay following the first frame of the game, the Tigers (12-36) topped the Spiders (21-27) 20-10 in seven innings.
 
Richmond scored the first run of the game in the top of the first and Towson matched in the bottom half. The Tigers jumped out to a lead in the bottom of the second with six runs. There were no scoreless frames in the final five innings for a 20-10 final in favor of the Tigers at John B. Schuerholz Park.
 
Key Stats:
  • Towson reliever Bobby Spencer (1-1) earned the win with three earned runs allowed on three hits in 2.0 innings pitched.
  • Richmond starter Jackson Kraemer (0-1) took the loss, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits and two walks in 1.2 innings pitched.
  • The Tigers outhit the Spiders 20-13, with seven starters picking up multiple hits. Taye Robinson (4-for-6, 7 RBI, 2 R) led the way with Bryce Frederick (3-for-3, 2 RBI, 4 R, 3 BB) and Elijah Dickerson (3-for-5, 1 RBI, 3 R, 1 BB) not far behind.
 
How it Happened:
  • With a runner on third in the top of the first, Jaffe's groundout to second base drove in the first run of the game for Richmond.
  • In the home half, Bryce Frederick doubled down the left field line to knock in Elijah Dickerson from second base.
  • In the bottom of the second with one out, Brian Heckelman's walk and Cole Stefano's double put runners on second and third. Bishop followed with an RBI single to right field, giving the Tigers a one-run edge. Dickerson hit an RBI single through the left side to extend the lead. Peyton's single through the left side to follow knocked in another run. Frederick's single to left field in the next at-bat loaded the bases, setting up Taye Robinson's two-run single up the middle. Akers followed with a single, loading the bases again. Jeremy Wagner's groundout to short drove in another run for a 7-1 advantage.
  • With runners on the corners in the top of the third, a throwing error from third base allowed two Richmond runs to score.
  • Frederick's bases-loaded walk and Chris Akers' bases-loaded HBP extended the Tiger lead to 9-3 in the bottom of the third.
  • Lass' two-run home run to left field in the top of the fourth drove in the fourth and fifth runs for the Spiders.
  • Heckelman led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run to left field for a five-run Towson lead.
  • Back-to-back-to-back home runs from Richmond in the top of the fifth pulled the Spiders within two runs.
  • Taye Robinson's two-run double down the left field line in the bottom of the fifth scored the eleventh and twelfth runs for the Tigers. Heckelman's RBI groundout later in the frame made it a 13-8 game.
  • Wilga hit a lead-off home run in the top of the sixth inning to get it back to a four-run game.
  • After Dickerson's lead-off single through the right side in the home half, Jordan Peyton (5) homered to left field. Robinson singled through the left side with a runner on third two batters later to extend the lead. With runners on second and third, Heckelman's two-run double to right center made it a 18-9 Towson lead.
  • Pacheco's home run to center field in the top of the seventh made it an eight-run game.
  • After two walks in the bottom of the seventh, Taye Robinson's two-run triple to right center ended the game at 20-10 in seven innings at John B. Schuerholz Park.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Taye Robinson had a career day at the plate with four hits and seven RBIs in the game, raising his batting average by 15 points.
  • Four Tigers picked up multiple RBI games: Peyton (9th), Frederick (8th), Heckelman (7th) and Robinson (5th).
  • Elijah Dickerson extended his team-leading hit streak to eight games. Peyton has hit safely in seven straight games.

The Tigers return to John B. Schuerholz Park tomorrow to face George Mason at 3 p.m. in the final mid-week game of the season.
